Course Description: This study abroad program focuses on data analytical techniques for fraud detection and investigation in Taiwan. The number of financial frauds, such as computer, credit card, auction, e-commerce, and telemarketing frauds, has been rapidly increasing in Taiwan. The political tension and not being able to share the data between Taiwan and China create opportunities for fraudsters to commit financial frauds in the region. Analyzing fraudsters’ networks and behaviors in Taiwan can provide many data analytics learning opportunities related to financial fraud in this region. Students will explore forensic analytics tools and techniques for preventive, detective, and corrective controls. This course will help students acquire forensic analytics tools and techniques, and make them better a better forensic analyst, consultant, auditor, tax professional, manager, entrepreneur, and business owner.

  • Understand the rationale of using data analytics to detect financial and computer frauds in Taiwan.
  • Obtain and cleanse the localized data in Chinese so that they can be transformed into English and processed by an international data analytics team.
  • Identify known fraud symptoms that are specific to the business environment in Taiwan, and use digital analysis to identify unknown fraud symptoms (e.g. suspicious transactions, hidden relationships, fraud threats)
  • Automate the detection process with the local analytical tools in Taiwan

  • Make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of preventive, detective, and corrective controls for companies doing business in Taiwan
