When is the trip?
​The trip will take place from May 12 to 21, 2019. 


How much does the study abroad trip cost?
​The total program cost is USD$4,250, without including 3-credit hour tuition.
​
What does the trip cost include?
​The trip cost includes airfare, accommodation, ground transportation, travel insurance, breakfast, and some other meals.
​
​Who can participate in the study abroad trip to Japan?
​This course counts as a 3000-level approved College of Business elective. To receive this trip as an elective, you will need to meet the following pre-requisite.

 

3000-level Pre-reqs: 60 earned hours and good academic standing. Students who do not have the minimum hour requirement cannot take this course at the 3000-level and should inform the program leader of this situation before applying.All majors are also encouraged to participate.

 

If you do not have the pre-requisite, you will need to take the course at the 2000-level. You can accomplish this by filling out a special course form (available in COB Advising) for an independent study.

How to apply?
​

STEP 1: EMAIL FACULTY LEADER TO REQUEST PERMISSION TO ENROLL IN THE COURSE.

 

STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION

 

  • Log in to AppalNET/Banner Self-Service

  • Select the "Direct Link to Web Self-Service" using your AppState username and password

  • Select the Student Tab

  • Scroll down and click on the "Faculty-Led Study Abroad Application Packet*" link

  • Select the program-specific application form from the programs drop-down menu

  • Fill out, save, and submit the online application.

 

STEP 3: PRINT, SIGN, AND DATE THE PAPER APPLICATION FORM AND TAKE IT TO THE JET BLDG TO PAY THE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT

 

  • Walk to the Office of Student Accounts, located on the 2nd floor of the John E. Thomas building

  • Give the name and term of your program to the Cashier who will look up the deposit charge on your account (e.g., Poland COM Summer 1)

  • Pay the non-refundable deposit by check, cash, credit card, or money order.

 

STEP 4: BRING YOUR SIGNED PAPER APPLICATION TO OIED FOR FINAL ACCEPTANCE INTO YOUR PROGRAM

 

  • Walk to the Office of International Education and Development (OIED), located on the 3rd floor of Plemmons Student Union, Suite 321

  • OIED will make your enrollment official upon reception of your signed paper application and verification of deposit payment

Are there any pre-trip meetings?
Yes, we plan to have 3 pre-trip orientation meetings.

​Can I apply for scholarship to cover the cost of the study abroad program?​



​​Yes, two international scholarship opportunities are available on campus to help you cover the cost of the study abroad program. Please read the following information and fill out a right form for the scholarship(s) you are interested in applying for. However, there is no guarantee that you will receive enough scholarship to completely cover the total costs of the study abroad program.

Walker College International Scholarships:
All applicants must have applied to a WCOB International Study Abroad program. Scholarships for short-term, faculty-led programs range from $100 to $1,000. They will be considered for all of the scholarships for which they are eligible. Click here for application and information.

OIED International Scholarships:
Any full-time degree-seeking student at Appalachian who is applying to an approved study abroad program offering academic credit is eligible to apply for these scholarships. Individual scholarships will vary but will not exceed $1500. Click here for application and information.

​Can I apply for financial aid to cover the costs of the study abroad program?​
Students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree program at Appalachian State University may apply for financial aid assistance. Student applying for study abroad financial aid must also meet all financial aid eligibility criteria. However, there is no guarantee that you will receive enough financial aid to completely cover the total costs of the study abroad program.

​What study abroad programs are approved for financial aid?
All study abroad programs must be approved through the Appalachian State University Office of International Programs to be eligible for financial aid.

What financial aid is available for study abroad programs?

Faculty-led study abroad programs are eligible for financial aid, if you meet requirements. Your awarded amount may be increased, however this is usually in the form of student loans. Click here for information. To use financial aid towards your study abroad, take the following steps:

1. Complete your FAFSA for the academic year in which the program is offered. Please be mindful of Financial Aid deadlines!
2. Visit the Office of Financial Aid's Website.  Read all the information carefully and print the Study Abroad Agreement Form for the appropriate term that you are requesting an increase in financial aid  due to studying abroad.           
3. Go to the Office of Financial Aid on the second floor of the JET Building to discuss your financial aid eligibility with Kim Overcash or another financial aid counselor PRIOR to applying to the program.

How many credit hours do I have to take to be eligible for financial aid?
For the semester study abroad programs an undergraduate student must be enrolled in at least twelve (12) credit hours and a graduate student must be registered for at least nine (9) credit hours to be considered full-time for financial aid. If you do not maintain full-time status, awards may be canceled or adjusted.

Will financial aid cover my deposit and airfare?
The student is responsible for paying any deposits required for study abroad programs. If the airfare is not included in the study abroad costs that are charged to the student account, the student will responsible for buying their airplane ticket. Keep in mind that financial aid funds may not be disbursed to your student account until ten days prior to the beginning date of the study abroad program. Generally, you will need to plan to pay from these expenses from your own resources.

When will I get my financial aid refund?
You must work with International Program and the Office of Student Accounts to obtain any funds that are not applied to the study abroad charges on your student account.
